HOW MANY DOG BREEDS ARE THERE…..!
We all love rearing pets in our homes. Dogs are the most familiar species of animals to humans.
The bond between humans and dogs run back to thousands of years. These dogs that we rear at
our homes have evolved from wild dogs who hunted they pray and have spent the lives in forests.
However, some people used to catch them and use them for various things such as to hunt guard
herds of cattle and sheep, to carry heavy loads and even to send mails from places to places.
THE DOG BREEDS
The number of dog breeds is different from countries to countries. It is because, the different
standards of dog breed recognition exists in those Cynologique International, which is the world
governing body of dog breeds recognition has recognized 340 dog breeds so far. AKC or the
American Kennel Club has only recognized 167 dog breeds so far.
AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB
AKC or the American Kennel Club has a specific methodology in identifying a dog breed as a
unique group of dog breeds. According to their rules, a new breed must have at least 300 – 400
breeds and they must have spanned for at least 3 generations.
There must also be a national tent club dedicated to this new breed, which includes at least 100
members, spanning no less than 20 states. The club must have a set of standards and
requirements that must meet in order to be a part of dog breeding. After a national breeding club
gets all the above qualifications, it can apply to the AKC for official breeding status. If approved,
breeders can compete in the "different" class of AKC affiliated dog shows. Generally, after
competing in this class for at least three years, the AKC Board of Directors to review them to
determine eligibility and provide full recognition and official breeding status. The number of
new breeds added to the AKC list varies from year to year, and since 2010 25 new breeds have
been granted official status.
CATEGORIES OF DOG BREEDS
The major dog breed governing organizations are categorizing dogs under different types
depending on the purpose people bred them for. AKC or the American Kennel Club has
categorized dogs in ro seven categories. Those categories are,
Sporting dogs are very special and they usually help people in hunting birds such as geese and
ducks. They are also called gundogs by organizations such as ACK due to this. However, there are
many dog breeds whicfallumore underarms major category. Irish setters, retrievers, spaniels, and
even Labradors belong to this dog group
These dogs are experts in sniffing. Most people use these dogs to find out missing things or even
children who are missing. They also work hard to save the lives of people who are stuck under
rubbles after earthquakes. Hounds are also used to sniff and find tiny insects that damage
There is no specific reason behind the name of these dog breeds. These dogs don't belong to any
of the major categories. That is the reason, why they are named as another group of dogs. These

Almost every member of this category is very cute and tiny. Most of these dogs are very small
and not even 10 pounds in weight. They are also called lapdogs. People just use them as cute
companions. Yorkshire Terrier and Toy poodle are some examples of toy dogs.
Group no 5
Terrier dogs are renowned and were first bred for controlling the rodent population. They are
popular because of their energy and bravery. Most of these dogs are named after the areas that
they were first seen or believed to be originated in. Staffordshire and Cairn are two examples of

Herding dogs can be denoted as a breed of very intelligent dogs. These dogs are mostly used to
control live stocks such as herds of sheep, cattle, and pigs. Training these dogs is a piece of cake
due to their intelligence. They understand human commands very quickly and respond quickly.
German Sheppard is a great example of the intelligence of these dogs. They are being widely
used by police and the military to find evidence in crimes.

These dogs are the strongest among all species of dogs and they are used for carrying heavy
loads and all. But they are never used for hunting. They are very loyal and responsible.
Rottweilers, Siberian Husky and st bernards are some of the working dogs.
